2012 Route 222 Showcase – Too much Cowbell

As the trip south progressed the Noise Nation road team was anticipating the annual showcase and a chance to watch the new team in action. Sort of a Spring training of our own if you will.

I haven’t been to Reading for many years and FirstEnergy Stadium looked great. The various renovations and

FirstEnergy Stadium (click to enlarge)

improvements performed over the last 2 years have resulted in an aged park that was now able to combine both past and new to provide a great venue.

The food was good, reasonably priced and the service top-notch. While not quite the variety of Coca-Cola Park, the menu selection was great. Philly fans are fortunate to have Coca-Cola Park and FirstEnergy stadium in their system just a short drive apart.

Ritchie T at the Bat (click to enlarge)

As the game progressed we found ourselves cheering on both the IronPigs and the R-Phils when a voice bellowed.

“Hey you!” “Stop ringing that bell!” “Are you a Lehigh Valley fan?” (we were all wearing IronPigs gear) “You may get away with that up there but we don’t do that here!”

The bells were promptly stowed without question.

If the Nation offended anyone in Reading we apologize – it was not our intention. If any R-Phils fan finds us in the Bud Light Trough this summer – stop on by – we’ll give you a bell – To Bring THE NOISE!

Wait. There was a game wasn’t there? Well, the Pigs lost to the R-Phils 7-6. The Pigs were short 8 players and had four Reading Players wearing Pigs uniforms. (Thanks to Michael Lore of the Express Times for that tidbit)

Regardless of all that the IronPigs looked ready to go. Once Coach Sandberg gets his remaining players we shall all enjoy the show.

See ya at the movies!

Phils Announce Opening Day Roster – 3 players to the Minors

As reported by mlb.com the Phillies have finalized their 2012 opening day roster.

It’s great to see 32 year old Pete Orr have his contract selected and we will miss “Speedy Petey” (174 stolen bases in 10 years in the Minors) on Thursday at Coca-Cola Park.

Joe Savery will remain with the big club as well and what a baseball story for Savery. I mentioned in a earlier post that the “Savery Story” would make a great movie. Let’s hope he adds the next chapter as a big league pitcher. Good luck Joe!

What a baseball story for Joe Savery – from Clearwater (where he hit .307) before returning to Reading then on to the Lehigh Valley mainly as a pitcher (4-0 1.80 ERA) and finally on to the big show all in 2011. (please click here for required reading)

Infielder Hector Luna and outfielder Scott Podsednik  were assigned to the Minors and we’ll most likely see them in the LHV to start. Left-hander Raul Valdes was also assigned to the Minors but with five lefties already on the IronPigs roster we’ll have to wait and wee where Valdes ends up. Although, all three of them would complete the 25 man roster.

Freddy Galvis will also stay with the Phils (for now). With injuries to infielders Ryan Howard (left Achilles surgery), Chase Utley (chondromalacia patella), and Michael Martinez (fractured fourth metatarsal in right foot), Freddy’s fate remains to be seen.

With what we saw from Galvis last year (.298 in 33 games with LHV and some spectacular defense), he may just remain on the big stage.

2011 IronPigs pitcher Justin DeFratus was placed on the IR retro to March 26th. DeFratus is only 24 and was drafted in the 11th round of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft and has been making a steady rise since.

The Phils currently have one vacancy left of their 40 man roster. Who do you think it will be?

Oink!

IronPigs Media Day 2012

With the sun poking through the Spring clouds you could taste baseball in the air. Coca-Cola Park was abuzz and Media Day 2012 only served to further whet the appetite for the 2012 season to start.

The afternoon began with a meeting in The Board Room with light-fare served. Following a bit of conversation of various topics it was time to move on to the clubhouse. The new elevator skin is very cool – check it out when you get the chance.

As I gazed across the room I spotted Noise Nation friend Michael “Phear the Phro” Schwimer – at 6’8″ he’s not hard to miss.

I first congratulated Michael on his recent engagement to IBFF Fitness Competitor Missy Coles and inquired as to when the date may

"Phear the Phro" (click to enlarge)

be. Michael and Missy will tie the not sometime in January 2013 and we certainly wish them luck.

Since Michael made his MLB debut back on August 21, 2011, I asked him what was going through his mind just before his very first pitch.

“It was a crazy, crazy frame of mind and everything was happening so fast which is probably not good and wasn’t good the first batter I faced.” (Nationals Danny Espinosa (2B) , sailed a 1-0 fastball over the CF fence on Michael’s second pitch ever) “I then took that big deep breath and kinda enjoyed the moment and pitched well.” (He retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the seventh.) For him it was a “heart racing”, “ton of fun”,  moment that he will never forget.

I told him we are glad he’s here but wish he wasn’t – he replied “Me too”.  Watch for Michael to pitch hard as he surely wants to breathe that Philly air again.

Schwimer has an interesting approach to pitching. Each pitch is planned as if he were playing Chess and thinking three moves ahead. But how does he prepare, what does he study in order to formulate his strategy?

Fortunately he’s faced most of the batters in the IL and he has film of all of them. He records every at bat after each outing. From the film and his pitch journal Michael then “formulates a solid game plan”.

He feels his advantage is his mental approach to pitching by “attacking and exploiting any strengths or weaknesses he may discover”. Michael is a true student of the game and will surely be a force to reckon with as his career progresses.

Rich 'Richie T' Thompson (click to enlarge)

Media Day wouldn’t be complete without speaking to IronPigs – IronMan Rich ‘Richie T’ Thompson. Richie looked fresh, strong and ready to fly. He said Spring was good but he was looking forward to playing games that matter. While the playoffs are a long way off Richie T and the rest of the club’s goal is certainly to return to the playoffs. Rich stated” anything short of that would be disappointing”.

I asked Rich what it was like to play for Hall of  Fame, Coach Ryne Sandberg and  Richie obviously appreciates Ryne’s aggressiveness which feeds right into his skill set.

The greatest lesson Thompson will take with him is the humility of Coach Sandberg.  As Rich explains “he’s accomplished just about everything you’d want to accomplish on the field and he certainly has you know – I guess you could say an air about him but it’s certainly not a look at me type of person” – “he’s accomplished what he’s accomplished and it’s never all about him”.

Sandberg had this to say “Rich is a spark plug and it seems anytime he get’s on base it’s a threat that we have a chance  to score a run but he also brings excitement to the base paths, he’s a great defensive center fielder.” “With the amount of time he’s spent here I know he enjoys coming here and enjoys playing here so that’s a good combination and he’s a great guy to have on the team.”

There is an obvious air of respect for Coach Sandberg throughout the organization but most of all among the players. The Lehigh

IronPigs Coach Ryne Sandberg (click to enlarge)

Valley has been fortunate to witness “Ryne Sandberg Baseball” first hand and 2012 hopes to be just a thrilling as last year.

Coach Sandberg is looking forward to 2012 and hopes to continue the winning ways of last season. While Sandberg is still awaiting the final 3 roster spots to be revealed  he has seen enough in Spring Training to feel confident in the scouting that has brought him the current group of players. Ryne spoke of closing by committee and the bullpen looking strong to start the season. He feels any of the pitchers in the starting rotation have the ability to help out the Phils at anytime.

With three catchers on the roster Ryne sees Eric Kratz and Tuffy Gosewisch sharing the duty to start the season and will then let them separate themselves. Left-handed hitting catcher John Suomi will also be available. Coach Sandberg is looking forward to the increase to 25 roster spots and is already anticipating the moves and double switch possibilities – it will be fun to watch.

Last stop on the clubhouse tour was local product and perennial All-Star Erik Kratz who played ball as a kid in Souderton. The Noise Nation was fortunate to meet up with Erik during the road trip (to the woods) of Rhode Island for the game in Pawtucket.

While Erik enjoyed his Spring with the 82 sometime 86 degree weather (he was keen to point out he did apply some extra lotion) the anticipation of opening day was what he looked forward to most and he’s clearly eager to go.

I wanted to know what Erik felt when he got the call up to the team he grew up watching back in Telford, PA as a kid. “To have the opportunity to play in the big leagues is a life long dream.” While it wasn’t his first call up (Kratz appeared in 9 games for the Pirates in 2010) after the first game was over he was able “to reflect on and kinda look and say wow but when I got in the game it was the game and I felt like I belonged, I felt like I could play there…” “To get called up and have the opportunity… you can’t describe it really.”

At 31, Kratz will spend his tenth year in Baseball after being drafted by Toronto in 2002. Since Erik has had many coaches throughout the years I inquired what he felt playing for Coach Sandberg.

Returning catcher Erik Kratz (click to enlarge)

“To play for him it’s awesome – he’s not a rah-rah coach, he’s not going to sit there and degrade you.” “The one thing that I think he helps and it shows with all of the wins with all of the different teams is the positivity – positivity towards the team and towards this group of guys and how he wants us to act with each other and portrays it in the clubhouse, on the field, in the training room – everywhere and he kept us away from bad losing streaks and everyone had this feeling of success even if they didn’t get a hit that at bat – I’m gonna get it this time. ”

Kratz had high praise for Sandberg as a highly successful player with the ability to come back and have the success managing, he attributed this to the work ethic of Coach Sandberg.

Lastly I asked,  “So when you’re behind the plate, you got all your gear on – do you ever hear the Noise Nation bells?”

“I hear the bells every once in a while – yes.” “Not all the time and I think it’s something where you slowly – the more you play here – the less you hear it – so I’ll probably hear it the first few days.”

I replied, “We’ll make sure you do!”

Erik chuckled, I thanked him and that was the conclusion of the clubhouse portion of Media Day 2012.

Stay tuned for part two – workout and BP photos

IronPigs (preliminary) 2012 Roster

While it will surely change before the first pitch, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs have released a preliminary 2012 Roster.

The Domonic Brown Story (so far)

“Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.”  – Yogi Berra

My older son plays baseball as his “full-time” sport.  He plays in a fall league and a spring/summer league and does some indoor training over the winter.  Several years ago, on a nice early April afternoon, we went out to a local park to get some batting practice.  I had a bucket with about 25 baseballs.  I threw him 25 pitches and he missed every single one.  It was early in the season, but he was suitably upset.  I reassured him, picked up the balls and pitched 25 more.  Yes, some of them might have been bad pitches, and he fouled one off, but he didn’t hit.  By the fiftieth pitch, he was livid.  I knew it was probably pointless to continue, but I wanted to teach him a lesson, and I didn’t want him to go home with fifty straight strikes.  Plus, I knew he would never hit with his mind so far off.  What could I do to get him to refocus?

I told him I’d pitch one more bucket, and that I’d pay him $1 for each ball he hit into fair territory or even hard into foul territory (no drag bunting!).  Guess how many he hit?

Yup.  All 25.  That spring batting practice cost me $25, but now I can always bring that up when his frustration level is impeding his progress and standing in the way of success.  Even if it’s not about baseball.  Over the years, it’s been worth every penny.

Domonic Brown was drafted by the Phillies in the 20th round of the 2006 draft.  A “toolsy” outfielder, he also considered playing college football as a wide receiver, but ultimately signed with the Phillies for $200,000.00.

He progressed through the system quickly, playing in the Gulf Coast League in 2006, Williamsport in 2007, and Lakewood in 2008.  By 2009 a .903 OPS had him promoted from Clearwater to Reading.  In 2010 a .602 SLG had him promoted to the IronPigs, where he continued to rake.  He made his Major League debut, played reasonably well, and was the number one prospect in all of baseball by the end of the season.

But, perhaps, that .210 average in his first 35 MLB games got to him.  Perhaps it wasn’t quite as easy as it had once been for him.  Perhaps not playing every day had some effect.  Maybe he started to hear the whispers:  “He holds the bat too high.”  “He takes poor routes to the ball in the outfield.”  And you know, being the number one prospect isn’t necessarily easy.  Just ask Pedro Alvarez or Mike Trout.

He went to the Dominican League at the conclusion of the 2010 season.  He hit just .069 in nine games.  The Phillies–it has been reported–asked him to come home for fear frustration or injury could impede the progress of their top prospect.  They tried to change his batting stance, lower his hands a bit.  Spring training 2011 was difficult.  All eyes were on the young gun, hoping he’d seize the right field job left open with the departure of Jayson Werth.  Brown’s struggles continued, culminating with a broken bone in his right hand on his first spring training hit after many hitless games.  He was something like 0-for-9 with two walks, one run, and six strikeouts prior to the one hit which prompted the hamate bone surgery.

“How can you hit and think at the same time?” – Yogi Berra

Following surgery, and a “warm up” with Clearwater, Brown was again here in the Lehigh Valley with our IronPigs.  He picked up right where he left off.  He went back to his original batting stance and even continued a hitting streak which extended back to the previous summer.  When Shane Victorino suffered his annual mid-season injury, the Phillies had no choice but to get their top prospect back to The Show.  A .245 average wasn’t horrible following the call up.  However, Victorino was getting healthy, and the Phillies were trying to catch the Braves and traded for Hunter Pence to fill the right field spot.  With the knowledge of Raul Ibanez’ advancing age, the Phillies asked Brown to go back to the ‘Pigs to work on left field.

Then the wheels came off.  Brown’s second tour with the ‘Pigs was not good.  He was optioned to the ‘Pigs on July 30.  He was in the lineup that night hitting fourth, batting .341 from his previous stint.  By August 29, his average had dipped to .265.  He started in left field that night and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.  He committed one registered error and misplayed two other balls, was booed, and ultimately pulled from the game.  (side note:  batting fifth that night for Syracuse was Tug Hulett, playing 1B.  Could he fill that Rizzotti spot, now?)

After that horrible evening, Brown’s appearances for the IronPigs last September went like this:

9/4/11 pinch hit BB

9/8/11 DH, 0-for-3, 1K

9/10/11 DH, 0-for-4, 2K

9/13/11 DH, 1-for-4

9/14/11 DH, 0-for-4, 1K

9/15/11 DH 0-for-3, 1BB, 2K

So what happened after he returned from the Phillies?  What happened in the Dominican League?  What happened there at the beginning of spring training 2011?  Was it his stance?  The blogosphere went wild.  There was conjecture about his vision, his attitude, his skills.  It seemed many (and I’m talking about Phillies fans) were happy about his struggles.  It’s my opinion that the “90%” of his game was just “off.”

This spring, Brown has been hitting well.  And for that reason, we can say that his vision is fine.  He hit the ball well in MLB camp, and has been crushing it since being sent to MiLB camp.  However, his fielding in left field has been somewhat of an “adventure.”  He’s made some bad breaks on the ball, and jammed his hand diving for a catch.  His neck hurt after one of the longer Florida bus rides.  And now, he has a sore throat.

So, in any case, he’s ours.  He’ll be our starting left fielder every day barring injury.  We’ll have a front row seat for fielding adventures and batting struggles.  Or, if he comes out to prove everyone wrong, our team will be the beneficiaries of his talent at the bat and his arm in left field.  But please note:  I cannot afford to pay a dollar for each hit.  And, Philly might need bats.  If he does really well, he won’t be here long.

I implore you, though:  Don’t boo him.  It won’t help 90% of his game, and besides, this isn’t Philadelphia.  If he’s doing something wrong, or not trying hard enough, he has a Hall of Fame manager who can point him in the right direction.  I was embarrassed on that August night last year.  I really want The Coke to be a place where we support our team—cheer their success and feel their failure.  Save your boos for the umpires.

Rizzotti Traded to Twins! More Transactions 3-30-12

Per Matt Gelb (@Magelb) on Twitter:

“Matt Rizzotti was traded to Minnesota for cash considerations.”

Bummer, I like him. Good luck Matt!

***

Some transactions for today:

The White Sox Released Delwyn Young

The White Sox also received former Phillie prospect Greg Golson from the Royals for cash considerations. Might see him back at CCP this summer.

The Phillies received SS Chin-Lung Hu from the Reds for cash but reports show (Matt Gelb via Twitter) that Hu failed his physical. Adds a big question mark at shortstop for the IronPigs if Galvis starts up with the Phillies. The The Hog Blog noted that the Phillies signed Utility man Joe Thurston and I could imagine he might be our shortstop.

The Dodgers released former IronPig Cedric Bowers.

The Phillies released:
RHP Paul Cusick
RHP Rye Davis
RHP Ian Durham
RHP Juary Gomez
RHP Chase Johnson
LHP Rob Cooper
LHP Fabian Cota
LHP Jack Van Leur
1B Mike Marshall
3B Geancarlo Mendez
OF Luis Unda

A lot of transactions going on this week and expect more next week. Those last minute signings after players are released during spring training!

Holy Kratz!

The big team made another roster move today optioning Erik Kratz (C) to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. I’m sure Erik wanted to back-up the Phils and he’s liable to get that chance again this year. Regardless, we’re glad to have last year’s AAA All-Star “backstop” returning.

Holy Kratz what a pic! (Erik Kratz poses with Noise Nation members Jason DiPro, Sara Haydt, Jay Gatsby and Dan Kehl)
