Even More on SWB – Why Not Yankee Stadium?

Continuing on with the discussion on where the 2012 SWB Yankees will play…

Many feel, have heard, are leaning towards the decision that they will be tenants of Coca Cola Park in 2012.

One thing that came to mind this afternoon was, “Why not Yankee Stadium?”

Why not?

New York City is the heart of the Yankee fan base. Combine the hard economic times and the incredibly high prices to attend NY Yankee games I’m sure the locals would relish the opportunity to see baseball in Yankee stadium at minor league prices. (Maybe not minor league prices, but a significant discount)

Any other thoughts on this?

  1. great idea, although my only thought would be the cost to operate Yankee stadium, even with minimal staff would not be worth what they would make off of a minor league baseball game’s attendance.

  2. It is a good idea–although they would have to work around the NYY schedule even more than working around the IronPigs in Allentown. ie they may not be able to play a day game the same day as a night NYY game. The PawSox did play a couple in Fenway this year. How did they draw?

    • On Aug 20 two games were played at Fenway.

The first game was the Red Sox AA affiliate Portland Sea Dogs vs. the Binghamton Mets.

The second game of the DH was the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox vs the Syracuse Chiefs.

Attendance was listed at 14,515 for each game.

By the way, when do the IronPigs get the chance to play in Beantown?

  3. The list appears to be narrowing…

The biggest concern is where to play while PNC Field is being renovated. Folks are being tight-lipped about the team’s home in 2012. Two leading contenders are Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Class AAA; International League) and Ottawa Stadium, the former home of the Ottawa Lynx (Class AAA; International League), though Frontier Field, home of the Rochester Red Wings (Class AAA; International League), has also been mentioned.

Richmond County Bank Ballpark, was on that list but with a new team owner and the need to get the permission of the New York Mets to move the SWB Yankees there for a season (the Yankees and the Mets have a territorial agreement that requires the other to approve any moves within the territory), a move to Staten Island is seen as being problematic.

Since there’s the chance an International League team could potentially cut into Brooklyn Cyclones (short-season A; NY-Penn League) attendance, permission from the Mets is not expected by some in the Yankees front office.
